A Girl and her Dragon.

I've been working on this for about the past month. I wanted to practise my animation, as well as work with Flash. And while I see room for improvement for the next (likely much shorter!) animation, I'm pleased that I finished this.

This was drawn, cleaned up, and coloured in Flash. The effects and compositing were done in After effects, and then exported from Premiere. I'd love to learn more about exporting, because that took *forever*. Holy cow.

Crafty projects.

Since I come from a long line of crafty people, I thought I'd show off a couple.

These are some Christmas presents I made last year:

I have also made two functional pop up books, based on the television show Doctor Who, as gifts.

The first one:

A blog post over on Livejournal about the creation of this book. This post was actually considered one of the 100 best of Livejournals past 10 years and included in their retrospective!

The second one:

Some photos of costumes I've made, thanks to consplayers.com:

Urahara Kisuke, from the anime Bleach.

A Soldier Heartless, one of the low HP bad guys in Kingdom Hearts.

German Shepherds and some more kids.

Colouring the German Shepherd sketches I did before, because I really quite liked them.

Subway and Park sketching.

I tried something a little bit different with the kids, giving them one base colour and then usually a lighter and a darker version of it, though a few got one more colour than that.

Mug shots.

Some drawing and painting practise, using some rather fantastic mug shots.

I like how the older guy in the bottom right turned out, the most.

Running yeti.

Frame by frame animation done in Flash for practise. Yetis are fun.

Chaucer the Rabbit.

This is Chaucer, a young boy who idolises a slightly useless elven Archer.

Subway sketchin'.

The guy playing the PSP was so epic, both my friends who I went subway sketching with drew him as well.

Looking through some old knitting patterns, the 'batwing sleeve' was brought to my attention again. I thought about it, and realised that only one kind of person could wear this sleeve and not look like an idiot:

Just playing around with the concept of a bat guy, with vestigial wings. Or they just want to give off that impression, perhaps? Maybe that's their shame, that they have no wings anymore.

Skull Guys.

Thinking of things my friend Mel would draw, I came up with these skull headed guys.

I really enjoyed the orange colour on the bottom of the robes!

Saw the Wolverine movie...

And here are some reactions.

... I couldn't take it seriously. I HATE when people laugh at movies, because it takes me out of the show. But I couldn't resist! There were so many places that were ridiculous. A child 'roaring', pretty much all the yelling, the cool poses that Wolverine kept taking that must've looked awesome in storyboarding form but pretty silly when someone takes them, the slow motion walk away from an explosion.

I enjoyed it enough to make it worth my money, but my goodness. I hate it when a movie that should be good is... Um... Less than.

That bit with nekkid Wolverine running into the barn though? Win. Though I did wonder why Ma and Pa Kent were in the Marvel universe.

The claws? MOST OBVIOUS CG EVER. They NEVER looked real, they always looked like some kind of cartoon claws. It reminded me of the guns in Roger Rabbit, how they cartoonily made things look like metal. The claws made me angry everytime we saw them. I wondered why they didn't put real claws on his hands for the shots that they didn't need to be going in or out of his hands, but they were ALWAYS doing that. Or tearing through tissue paper metal, or something.

Speaking of... Worst CG scene in the entire film (IMO) was when Sabertooth went up to Wolverine's girlfriend and managed to tear the metal on the hood of her car. From what I understand, those are bone extensions, not magical adamantium sharp claws, right? Why was there no resistance when he ripped through the metal? The hood behaved like wet tissue. *I* could have torn through it.

Sabertooth's all fours run had NO WEIGHT at all. It was obvious wirework, and it just felt forced. We laughed when he was 'running' as well, because it was just completely unconvincing. Lookit my hands touch the ground! That means I'm running! Wheeeeee!

There was unnecesary CG planes, unnecesary CG helicopters, and unnecessary CG fields. Because there are no fields anywhere to film in.

There were also some really sweet compositions at the end of the film, but they just felt so FORCED. I think I didn't like them because if you're creating the entire world in the computer and just putting in green screened actors, then it is artificial by design. I know there was no way to *actually* have pieces of nuclear reactor just laying around, but still.

I'm a little worried about the shift from shooting on location to shooting in green screen rooms. Computers can't get reality yet, and I'm worried about when they can. Everything that goes into something that you're greenscreening has to come from a person's brain, there are never any mistakes or happy accidents.

Though it makes jobs for us, so what am I complaining about?

End of Sheridan.

Last night, after printing out my portfolio and getting my glasses adjusted, I decided that it was the perfect time for my celebratory lobster that I had been promising myself since the end of February. Originally I was going to get one when I finished all of my rough animation, that got pushed back until I finished all of my clean up, which got pushed back to now. It's possible I just wanted some other kind of meat than tuna or chicken... But mostly I just love lobster.

I realised as I was eating it just what it was I was celebrating, and marking an end to. It's the end of that idyllic time of school, when you only need to worry about completing the assignments. Now I'm out in the real world. I can't depend on government money to help me through the year, now I have to pay that back. It's time to get a real job.

So so long Sheridan, and thanks for the memories. While there are most certainly things that need to be changed at the school and in the program, I came out of it with a series of skills that I can't wait to apply somewhere. I completed the four years, I was part of a finished third year film that was accepted into the teletoon scholarship at Ottawa and won viewers choice, and I finished my very own fourth year film along with all of the ridiculous electives we had to do.

Today I have to start working towards my next goal: getting my very first real job, where I will be a contributing member of a team. And while the economy makes me very nervous, I'm sure I'll be able to find a job doing something. I will work hard, and I will find one.

These are from two days ago. Caught a cold, and I feel awful. The howling winds and rain yesterday wouldn't've helped... I stayed home and slept. Unfortuately, still not better.

On to layouts today! Meanwhile, here are two drawings from sc... fifteen, I think. n__n It's all marked at school.

I drew him with dot eyes, and I thought it was really cute. He's just going to have them and look all confused, then blink and he'll have his normal eyes again.

Oh dear, someone needs a comb!

Another drawing that made me laugh...

But unfortunately had to be cut from the scene. Oh well! Thanks to the miracles of the internet, I can share it here! This is actually orange col-erase, I'm not sure why it scanned so pinky. *shrug* That's what I get for using a crummy scanner, I guess.

He's just woken up from sleeping. I enjoyed his silly eyes.

Background!

Using some photos that I took at Shava for texture on the bark. It's the side of a hundred year old encyclopedia with the uneven pages. I thought it looked cool. n__n

The leaves are the cover of the same book, I thought the pebbly texture looked kind of leaf-like.

I've got another one with a foreground element in the corner, I think that might help.

Any comments or suggestions?

Some ruff drawings from my animation.

My favourite drawings in the scenes that I've done so far.
Lindley's world has just ended... Outside forces have stolen her only friend.
Lindley is unsure what these other dryad kids are doing.

Keb's putting his feather back in his hair, and is very pleased with himself.

Rough scene.

First scene of my film! I still have to work out the timing between Keb and Lindley, so they're not fighting each other for screen time so much.

I was very excited by the three frames where Keb antics, and then tadaaas! over the feather staying in his hair.
